Current project

Homeostasis is maintained by constant changes in physiology in response to different inputs, as temperature. Human bodies need to reorganize their physiology in order to survive when affected by fever, heat stroke or hypothermia. Thermoregulation is particularly challenging to insects because they cannot easily control their internal body temperature. Fertility is one trait that can be negatively affected by different environmental stressors. In insects, it remains largely unknown how internal organs perceive differences in temperature and how it affects the production of gametes. Investigating this question will likely help us understand and predict the impact of climate change on other insects, ranging from disease vectors to agricultural pests.

Biosketch

Ana Caroline is a Brazilian biologist and developed her whole scientific career in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She worked under the supervision of Dr. Pedro Oliveira at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro as an undergraduate student until her first post doc, studying redox metabolism in hematophagous insects. Because of her early involvement with science, she could mentor many students, be at undergraduate committees and do many collaborations that still render her some publications. Since high school, she often attended different national and international scientific meetings presenting posters. She was also involved with science communication, which allowed her to give many lectures in high schools, to write two articles for the traditional scicomm magazine “Ciência Hoje das Crianças” and to be a permanent volunteer in the science museum “Espaço Ciência Viva”. In February 2018, Ana Caroline joined the BMB department as a postdoctoral fellow to work with Dr. Daniela Drummond-Barbosa. She joined her laboratory to learn how to work with the non-hematophagous insect and model system Drosophila melanogaster, to refine her knowledge in fluorescence microscopy and to learn more about insect physiology, besides get experience in a foreign country and practice her English. Ana wants to pursue a career in academic research.
