2017 ANNUAL BMB RETREAT
April 2-4, 2017 Gettysburgh, PA
This year we gathered for three days in Gettysburgh, Pennsylvania for our annual Departmental Retreat. The retreat is an invaluable opportunity for our diverse department and training program to engage scientifically and bond in an informal setting. This year our mandate was to “celebrate science, embrace diversity, and have fun,” and we delivered! Nearly every trainee took the opportunity to present his/her research for a total of about 40 posters and 20 talks. This year featured three keynote addresses: BMB Scholastic Award winners Leslie Weaver (Postdoc Drummon-Barbosa Lab) and Kai Fu (former student, Wan Lab) and the trainee invited faculty keynote Sabra Klein (MMI). In addition to science, we sorted ourselves into teams and then competed in some silly games included charades and deciding on what to pack for a hike on the Moon. In our down time, BMBers could be found playing cricket, taking a yoga class, or going on a ghost tour.
The retreat was chaired by Abigail Zeiman and Christina Vivelo with Steve Wellard as the vice-chair. Jessica Hopkins, Justin Jacob, Thao Tran, Aravanith Jayabalan, Yajuan Guo, Fengrong Wang, and Lyle McPherson rounded out the trainee retreat committee. Their work was overseen by Dr. Jennifer Kavran.
