The practicum has been structured to provide trainees with exposure to “real world” clinical, financing and organizational aspects of health services and outcomes in the care of older adults with an emphasis on key elements of person- and family-oriented care.
Focuses on the importance of interdisciplinary care in the care of older adults. Complements traditional coursework by providing exposure to the real-world settings and organizations that comprise aging services delivery and infrastructure.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Recognize the range of clinicians and health professionals involved in the care of older adults, including primary care and specialist physicians, nurses, occupational and physical therapists, dentists, podiatrists, social workers, direct care workers
- Define interdisciplinary team-based care and innovative approaches in use across the continuum of care settings
- Assess organizational, educational, and financial barriers to interdisciplinary team-based for older adults
Methods of Assessment
This course is evaluated as follows:
- 50% Reflection
- 20% Participation
- 30% Grant concept paper
Course will involve student field trips to offsite organizations. Course will require students to register as Student Observers of Clinical Care with the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
