Description
Presents as the first course in the Epidemiologic Methods sequence. Introduces students to the principles and concepts used in epidemiologic research. Presents material in the context of an epidemiological framework with three major areas: populations and an introduction to study designs; measurement, including measures of accuracy and disease occurrence; and methods used for comparing populations. Illustrates synthesis lectures on how these elements come together in modern epidemiological research. Provides experience using laboratory exercises and assignments with applying concepts and calculations to problems drawn from real epidemiological data and published literature.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Describe key features of populations in time in epidemiologic research
  2. Identify and distinguish basic epidemiological study designs
  3. Recognize important characteristics associated with measurement in epidemiologic studies
  4. Distinguish and calculate validity and reliability measures that quantify the accuracy of measurement
  5. Describe types, purposes, and key components of surveillance systems
  6. Select, calculate, compare, and interpret basic population health measures and measures of association for comparing population health measures.
Methods of Assessment
This course is evaluated as follows:
  • 17% Lab Assignments
  • 40% Midterm
  • 40% Final Exam
  • 3% Assignments
Enrollment Restriction
No auditors permitted.
Special Comments

This is a hybrid course with both an onsite section (340.751.01) and synchronous online section (340.751.41). Please choose the format you need (either in-person or online) when registering in SIS.

You must register for one lab section 340.951 when you register for this course. Labs begin at 10:15 AM. Lab sections 340.951.01, MW, 340.951.02 MW and 340.951.03, MF will be held on-site, and students will attend lab and work in lab groups in-person. Lab section 340.951.04 (MW), will be held remotely via Zoom. A Live Q & A Session will be held on Monday at 9 - 10AM, both in-person and synchronous online. Students are expected to view weekly lecture content PRIOR to the LiveTalks and labs.

MPH students: those who earned a grade of "A" in 340.721 EPIDEMIOLOGIC INFERENCE I or 340.601 PRINCIPLES OF EPIDEMIOLOGY may opt to skip the course 340.751 and proceed into 340.752 EPIDEMIOLOGIC METHODS 2 during the 2nd term. MPH students who have elected the Epi/Biostat Concentration may NOT skip the 340.751 course.
