Description
Current Issues in Public Health is designed to broaden and enrich the academic experience through presentations on timely public health topics and interactions with faculty and other experts. This course concentrates on emerging trends in public health practice, groundbreaking research on problems impacting the health of diverse individuals and communities, and current perspectives on longstanding diseases and hazards. Sessions cover a broad spectrum of cutting-edge population-based, prevention-oriented issues relevant to the professional practice of public health in both the private and public sectors primarily in the domestic setting though topics of global significance are covered.
Faculty experts present public health topics of current interest such as health promotion and disease prevention, U.S. health care delivery systems, environmental problems and the spectrum of factors influencing the health status of diverse populations and communities.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Advocate for political, social or economic policies and programs that will improve health in diverse populations
  2. Select communication strategies for different audiences
  3. Communicate audience-appropriate public health content, in writing and orally
