Description
Practical knowledge of molecular biology techniques is an essential part of any biological science graduate program.
Supplements the scientific classroom experience of students in biological science graduate programs by providing hands-on experience with essential core molecular biology techniques. Involves intensive hands-on laboratory instruction along with the science behind the applications. Focuses on the following methodologies: polymerase chain reaction (PCR) DNA amplification, quantitative PCR, DNA and protein gel chromatography, Western blotting, transformation of bacteria, and expression and purification of heterologous proteins by bacteria. Gives special attention to technical aspects of scientific reproducibility and rigor.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Explain how these methodologies work scientifically and in what context they should be employed to answer scientific questions.
  2. Describe and Identify concepts of technical aspects of reproducibility and rigor.
  3. Employ laboratory techniques that are widely used in the areas of immunology and infectious disease research.
  4. Compare and contrast different methodologies to solve biological problems.
Methods of Assessment
This course is evaluated as follows:
  • 50% Final Exam
  • 50% Lab notebook quality
Enrollment Restriction
