Introduction to Online Learning

Description
Intended for those students who want an overview of health economics, but who do not expect to pursue additional courses in the field.
Introduces students to the application of economic tools to the interaction among the many stakeholders in the health care system and the public health system. Uses a standard health economics text as the main reading; also draws on articles from the popular press and professional journals that illustrate the tools of economics or their application to health care and public health issues.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Compare and contrast the demand for health and health care
  2. Motivate the demand for health insurance
  3. Describe the economics of production of health services
  4. Discuss the production and supply of health professionals
  5. Discuss the supply of technologies (including medical devices and pharmaceutical products)
  6. Discuss the economics of public health externalities, and the role of government in remedying market failures in the health care sector
