Technologies for obtaining, collecting and creating spatial data continue to advance; use of tracking devices, cell phones and satellite imagery such as Google Earth are advancing and becoming widespread. Learn how these technologies have broadened and enhanced the field of spatial analysis in public health research and practice.

Examines technologies for collecting, obtaining and creating spatial data. Technologies considered include, but are not limited to GPS, tablets, tracking devices, cell phones, Google Earth, remote sensing applications, and the Internet. Introduces software applications such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and R for integrating spatial data from the aforementioned technologies into useable forms for spatial analysis. Also covers metadata, data accuracy, and confidentiality/disclosure issues.

Learning Objectives:

Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Incorporate appropriate spatial data technologies for public health research and practice applications
  2. Design a protocol for collecting, obtaining and/or creating spatial data for a public health research or practice application
  3. Assess the accuracy of spatial data and develop proper metadata files
