Focuses on advanced issues at the forefront of climate change and public health policy and practice. Takes a complex-systems view that traverses the boundaries between sectors, spans government levels, and integrates perspectives across public and private actors. Topics to be determined each year according to faculty interest and student need. Uses case studies, policy analysis readings, and discussions to foster student learning.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Identify both traditional and unexpected climate impacts on populations, and understand their prioritization based on adaptive, iterative risk and vulnerability assessment tools
- Recognize approaches for incremental vs transformational adaptation, including understanding dynamic adaptive capacity and short vs longer term planning horizons
- Recognize co-benefits to health from climate mitigation actions, and understand approaches to evaluating trade-offs and synergies among mitigation and adaptation policies
- Critique climate change-related communication strategies
- Apply strategies for proactive cross-disciplinary collaboration, and develop and link climate and health monitoring indicators to both local and global interventions
