Description:

Conceptualizes and defines family. Establishes foundational knowledge regarding the health of families. Reviews demographic trends and patterns in family health across diverse groups. Critiques theories and measurement of family health. Examines the health of families across a variety of key issues and specialized topics (e.g., fertility, mental health, caregiving). Investigates evidence-based policies and interventions that support the health of families. Facilitates students’ critical analysis of a family health issue of their choosing and associated programmatic and policy approaches.

Learning Objectives:

Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Learn and understand the definitions, trends, measurement approaches, and conceptual frameworks pertaining to family health in the U.S.
  2. Identify and explore existing theory and research about critical and timely topics pertaining to family health (e.g., mental health, health behaviors, adversity, and resilience)
  3. Analyze and critique policies and programs pertaining to family health
Methods of Assessment:

This course is evaluated as follows:

  • 55% Writing Assignments (Abstract, Paper 1 and Paper 2)
  • 25% Final Presentation
  • 20% Attendance and Participation
