Description
Covers strategies for constructing a compelling scientific grant application, common errors in grantsmanship and how to avoid them, grant application review criteria, ethics related to grant writing and reviewing, and identification of funding sources. Prepares a short 6-page NIH-style proposal and a revision of this same proposal following review. Includes proposal topics that are selected by the student and developed with the instructor. Prepares critiques of classmates’ anonymous, instructor-edited proposals for discussion in class.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify essential components of hypothesis-driven research plans
  2. Construct a proposal intended to convince reviewers
  3. Gain grantsmanship skills by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of other proposals
  4. Experience the strengths and caveats of a peer-review system
Methods of Assessment
This course is evaluated as follows:
  • 100% Student evaluation based on completion of a well-developed proposal,constructive critiques of other proposals and class participation
