Description
One needs access to the population, in order to promote the health and well-being of the masses. For those interested in the health and mental health of youth, schools provide the perfect access point given compulsory education requirements. Further, schools are the major service delivery agency for this population often serving as the first identifier of needs and sole provider of mental health supports to youth. If you are interested in interventions that can be (or maybe already are) implemented in schools, then this course is for you. This course provides concrete and practical steps to planning for school-based prevention research.
Discusses school-based prevention and research including the theoretical frameworks supporting schools as a context to address public health. Examines the barriers and challenges to implementation of evidence-based interventions in schools. Explores methodological implications of school-based research as well as sources of funding for conducting school-based research.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify the theoretical frameworks (e.g., ecological systems theory) that describe how schools are a prime context for public health and are an important and malleable factor in youth development
  2. Explain the barriers to implementing evidence-based interventions in school settings and thus their limited use
  3. Identify research methodologies that are appropriate for conducting school-based research
  4. Identify federal agencies that fund school-based prevention research

The course will move to a virtual format using Zoom and there will be two one-half day sessions. Students are required to complete readings prior to the start of the course. Please see the CoursePlus site for additional details. The final assignment will be due June 30, 2021.
