Description:

Providing a solid grounding in study design, this 2nd year DrPH seminar series is intended to support students as they begin to think about their dissertation topic and planned dissertation research.

Assists 2nd year DrPH students mastering skills related to study design and implementation, as preparation for work on their dissertation proposal. During the course of the year, this seminar series focuses on epistemology, alternative study designs, and how different study designs may best be suited to address different types of research questions. The course builds upon other methods classes and supports students to develop a draft research proposal of their own. While the course is designed to prepare students for their dissertation work, students can complete the course without having decided upon a dissertation topic.

Learning Objectives:

Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain multiple epistemologies and how epistemologies may influence the research approach
  2. Examine qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods and policy analysis research and evaluation methods to address public health issues and distinguish between which approach may best be used to address different types of questions
  3. Design a qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, policy analysis or evaluation project to address a public health issue

This course is evaluated as follows:

  • 25% Quizzes
  • 25% Peer-feedback
  • 50% Final Paper

This course is only open to DrPH students.

Students must participate in the seminar throughout their second year, and must register for this course in the summer between their second and third year.
