Do you want to conduct high-quality research related to achieving health equity? Do you need to learn practical techniques ranging from how to engage key stakeholders, tailor interventions for your study population, and more? Are you ready to apply theories to real-world situations, but you are not sure how to take the next step?

Provides practical methods to develop, implement, and sustain successful health equity research programs in the United States and communities around the world. Introduces students to innovative methods, practical tools, and skills required to conduct rigorous health equity research and translate evidence-based strategies into practice and policy. Topics range from stakeholder engagement and behavioral intervention development to research methods in healthcare services for socially at-risk populations. Includes lectures, interactive discussions, case-based examples, and opportunities to obtain feedback on research ideas from experienced investigators.

Learning Objectives:

Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Define health equity and identify current public health models and priorities for achieving health equity globally, including how factors at various socioecological levels drive health inequities in the U.S. and around the world
  2. Understand how cultural and structural competence as well as patient-centeredness enhance the quality and success of health equity research
  3. Describe methods used to develop appropriate assessment and intervention materials for under-served, low-literacy and non-native English speaking populations
  4. Engage community and organizational stakeholders in health equity research and apply principles of community-based participatory research in their work
  5. Understand and apply innovative methods to develop health equity interventions that address local needs while leveraging solutions that have worked around the globe (when possible)

This course is evaluated as follows:

  • 30% Midterm Paper
  • 40% Final Presentation
  • 10% Reflection
  • 20% online journal article discussions
