Description
Focuses on vector-borne diseases prominent in tropical infections. Emphasizes global epidemiology, diagnosis, clinical presentations, pathophysiology, and treatment of microorganisms as well as characterization and control of vectors. Integrates clinical cases and pathology through laboratory sessions. Covers principal diseases including malaria, African and American trypansomiasis, leishmaniasis, filariasis, yellow fever, dengue, hemorrhagic fevers, Bartonella, Lyme, Rickettsial, plague and toxoplasmosis.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify key vector-borne diseases for the tropics.
  2. Recognize the clinical presentation, treatment, epidemiology, and control of dengue, hemorrhagic fevers, and other arboviral infections, including malaria.
  3. Discuss the biology, global distribution, etiology, transmission, impact, diagnosis, treatment and control of vector borne diseases relevant to the tropics, such as yellow fever, typhus, trypanosomes, leishmaniasis, filariasis and Onchoceriasis, Borrel.
Methods of Assessment
This course is evaluated as follows:
  • 20% Participation
  • 40% Midterm
  • 40% Final Exam
Special Comments

This is an onsite section of the class. The other section (.11) will be taught virtually at the same time. Onsite students will comply with JH Covid19 testing protocols.
There will be a break at 10am for 15 minutes and a lunch break will be at 12:15pm for 30 minutes.
