223.802 GDEC Seminar 2

Description
Explores a variety of tools and methods applied by GDEC faculty to conduct public health research with a focus on hands-on skills building. Specific topics include: finding and managing public datasets; exploratory analysis using secondary data (e.g. calculating standard indicators); data visualization strategies; and considerations for research projects which involve human subjects.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify and access key sources of publicly available data relevant to specific health issues
  2. Manage and manipulate a DHS dataset to tabulate survey variables in Stata or R
  3. Choose appropriate tools and methods for data visualization in order to share data with diverse audiences
  4. Explain important issues and considerations for research studies involving human subjects and oversight by Institutional Review Boards (IRBs)
