Description:

Provides a combination of didactic instruction, competency-based learning activities and supervised experiential learning at clinical facilities, community and public health organizations. Learning experiences include lectures/presentations, group discussions, peer learning and case-based scenarios in preparation for applying knowledge in the practice of dietetics. The practicum engages the student, the practicum site, and the faculty/preceptors in shared responsibility for the provision and acquisition of competencies across a broad spectrum of dietetic practice settings including clinical, food service and community nutrition, culminating in an 8-week public health nutrition experience. Led by the Johns Hopkins Health System Clinical Nutrition Department, the practicum extends from June (following the first 4 terms of coursework) to March of the next calendar year (3rd term of the subsequent academic year).

Learning Objectives:

Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Integrate and apply methods and skills learned in courses taken on the first year of the MSPH in a practical setting
  2. Develop new skills essential for functioning as an effective global health professional, in assuming responsibility on the ground and becoming a reliable and collaborative member of a project team, an effective communicator, writer, trainer and implementer
  3. Evaluate a program or field project as it relates to public health nutrition
  4. Integrate and understand knowledge through critical literature reviews, and analysis and interpretation of scientific data
  5. Develop a proposal, take initiative, provide direction, and participate in the implementation, evaluation and/or analysis required to establish and achieve project goals
  6. Communicate effectively, manage relationships and participate in teams
  7. To allow for the seamless transition from student to public health professional
Methods of Assessment:

This course is evaluated as follows:

  • 45% Preceptor evaluation
  • 15% Written Assignment(s)
  • 20% Essay on entire practicum experience (individual rotations and overall experience)
  • 20% Assignments

Enrollment Restriction:

Only students previously accepted to the MSPH/Registered Dietitian program and on their 2nd year.
