Description
How do public health policymakers and practitioners monitor health problems and track implementation of health policies and programs? How do health services researchers and epidemiologists understand trends in health, health care delivery, risk factors, and outcomes? They need accurate, reliable, and timely representative health and health care data. This course provides an overview of some of the nation’s major data collection efforts in households and health care establishments in the United States and is intended for students interested in learning about how national surveys are conducted by federal health statistics agencies.
This course provides an overview of some of the nation’s major data collection efforts in households and healthcare establishments in the United States. The course introduces population-based and establishment-based surveys conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, covering policy-relevant topics including health and nutritional status, health care access and utilization, and the provision of services in inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory, long-term, and hospice care settings.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Describe major national data collection efforts conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics in U.S. households and health care establishments
  2. Discover the complexity in survey designs, development, and operations employed in national data collection efforts
  3. Identify and compare national health and health care survey data
  4. Critique research studies that use national health and health care survey data

This course will be offered for 2 days in the HPM Summer Institute. Students are required to complete readings prior to the start of the course. The final assignments will be due no later than July 15, 2017.
