Students should have taken a college level molecular biology, cellular biology or biochemistry class.

Description
Designed for students who want to understand cancer at the molecular level.
Explores some of the key molecular and cellular aspects of the biology of cancer. Topics include cancer genetics, DNA damage, and cell signaling pathways including RAS and Epidermal Growth Factor Receptors. Additionally, covers a select set of current research areas that aim to further the understanding and treatment of cancer. Learning objectives emphasize how these molecular mechanisms are regulated, contribute to oncogenesis, and can be targeted therapeutically.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Recognize and discuss the hallmarks associated with cancer
  2. Appreciate how genetics contributes to cancer
  3. Understand the contribution of genetics to cancer progression as well as the dual roles of DNA damage for both cancer progression and treatment.
  4. Understand how signal transduction pathways contribute to cell growth, cancer, and can be targeted therapeutically
  5. Become familiar with emerging areas of cancer research and treatment
