Our Have and Have-Not world is divided into places where there are effective public health services and where there are not. You can fix that.

This course will teach you how to help public health systems do their job better by using modern tools of quality improvement and quality assurance

You will be equipped with a background in what high quality public health services look like and strategies to help any public health organization assess and improve its performance.

Prepares students to design and implement a program of performance and assessment in public health practice. Examines the historical and theoretical background of public health practice and quality improvement. Presents strategies for developing public health practice improvement strategies that can be implemented in a high or low income setting, in a public or private sector, in a national or a sub-national organization. Includes practical tools that can be adapted for local use. Compares top-down and bottom-up approaches to public health practice quality.

Learning Objectives:

Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

1. Use measurements to evaluate the performance of public health functions at the local level
2. Create performance improvement plans based on observed strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities

Methods of Assessment:

This course is evaluated as follows:

• 10% Participation
• 40% In-class Exercises
• 50% Final Exam
