Description
Analyzes the structure, organization, administration and management of social and health service programs serving the maternal and child health populations. Lectures, discussions, and analysis of current research and practice present the goals and impact of national programs such as Title V MCH/CSHCN, Medicaid/CHIP, Head Start, Family Planning, WIC/Nutrition, community/migrant health centers, child welfare, and of privately sponsored programs.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Apply a systems framework to identify how MCH services can influence the health of women, children, adolescents, and families
  2. Compare the organization, structure and function of health care, public health, and regulatory systems that provides services for women, children, and adolescents with a special focus on the public sector that serves low income populations in the United States and in developing countries
  3. Explain how historical forces, philosophy and values have shaped maternal and child health services
  4. Identify the core functions of public health and the 10 Essential Services as they relate to maternal and child health
  5. Describe the body of United States federal legislation that mandates and provides funds for the delivery of services to women and children
  6. Apply strategies to influence the legislative, budget, and administrative processes at the federal, state, regional, and community levels
  7. Discuss multiple dimensions of policy design, implementation and evaluation of maternal and child health programs, including the roles of ethics and evidence
  8. Propose strategies to identify stakeholders and build coalitions and partnerships for influencing maternal and child health outcomes
