Description
Become prepared to plan, implement and navigate within HCOs to successfully apply the concepts of quality and patent safety in real world settings taking into account the contextual realities of their respective HCO setting
Provides an understanding of the approaches and adaptations undertaken by US and international HCOs to institute quality and patient safety initiatives in patient care. Explores the extent, relevance and impact of the HCO structure and strategy on quality and patient safety functions. Introduces the Baldrige Performance Excellence framework to assess the quality and patient safety functions within the larger HCO context. Emphasizes how the internal and external HCO environments and culture serve as facilitators or barriers for quality and patient safety initiatives. Highlights key HCO roles that enable effective practical implementation of quality and patient safety initiatives including resource allocation.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Describe an HCO’s quality and safety functions using the Baldrige Performance Excellence framework
  2. Analyze the importance of the HCO context and culture in which the quality and patient safety initiatives get implemented
  3. Assess the facilitators and potentially address the challenges that one may face for implementing quality and patient safety initiatives in an HCO
  4. Critique the quality and patient safety function within the HCO in the context of the overall HCO’s structure and strategy in determining
