Description
This course meets the MPH practicum requirement and is open to any interested graduate students. The 2nd term class is on campus and focuses on public health issues in Baltimore City. The 4th term course is online and is designed for students at any location either on or off-campus. In the 4th term all practicum work can be completed independently at a time convenient to the student.
Builds on the course prerequisite and satisfies the MPH practicum requirement through hands-on application of knowledge and skills to real-world practice concerns and settings in collaboration with a public health practice organization. Students engage in a significant experience through addressing public health priority areas identified by the collaborating organization. All practicum work is shared with the collaborating organization for use at their discretion. Students complete the public health practicum assignments under the direction and supervision of the course faculty. Practicum work is designed around pre-identified priority areas and projects, students are not able to select topics outside of these areas.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Assess population health of a specific jurisdiction
  2. Develop strategies and approaches to address public health priorities
  3. Apply public health and social determinants of health knowledge and theory to address specific public health challenges
  4. Assess and develop public health communications to targeted audiences
  5. advance personal career growth and development, using the core competencies for public health professionals as a framework
