Description
Introduces students to the issue of health disparities. Addresses the prevalence of disparities in health status, theories that explain disparities, and efforts to address them. Covers health disparities by race/ethnicity as well as socioeconomic status.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Discuss changing U.S. demographics related to race and ethnicity
  2. Define health disparities and cultural competence
  3. Describe the various federal mandates and regulatory standards related to health disparities and cultural competency
  4. Identify the prevalence of disparities in health status
  5. Explain theories that explain disparities and efforts to address them
  6. Understand health disparities by race/ethnicity, language, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and the social determinants of health
