Description
Familiarizes students with some of the foundational readings in health policy and provides an understanding of the theories and conceptual frameworks used in the development, implementation and analysis of health policies. Explores how different disciplines (political science, ethics, law, economics, sociology, behavioral sciences and history) inform thinking about the development, implementation and analysis of health policies that make a difference in the public’s health.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Discuss and critique several of the foundational readings in health policy
  2. Demonstrate how different disciplines and theories are relevant to contemporary problems in health policy
  3. Describe how theories and disciplines are used in the development of a conceptual framework for policy development and research
  4. Demonstrate how research can test a theory and help to re-formulate the theory based on new knowledge
