Description
Instruction and student-led discussion broadly focuses on these areas: (1) human rights in general, (2) health as a human right, (2) impact of health policies, programs and practices on human rights, and (3) collective impacts of human rights violations, whether gross violations in human conflict or insidious violations associated with mistreatment of individuals and marginalized groups.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. List international instruments defining human rights principles, as well as some of the historical development and applications of these treaties,
  2. Discuss realization in practice of the right to health and its consequences for health practice,
  3. List governmental obligations for health under international human rights law,
  4. Describe linkages between health and human rights,
  5. Discuss application of the human rights framework to the design, implementation, and evaluation of public health policies and interventions,
  6. Analyze collective health impact of human rights violations,
  7. dilemmas in the application of human rights principles to health research and practice, and
  8. the numerous roles for health professionals in documenting and ameliorating human rights violations
