300.603.01 The Tools of Public Health Practice and Decision Making

Description
Students conduct practicum work, including assignments, fieldwork and reflection, under the supervision of faculty from Johns Hopkins and the Baltimore City Health Department. Students select competency-based assignments and fieldwork activities to build expertise and experience relevant to their area of specialization. Throughout, students utilize the core functions, essential services, and competencies for public health professionals as a framework to assess and evaluate the implications of practice activities on Baltimore City population health. Practicum activities are centered on Baltimore City; however, the intent is for lessons learned to be relevant to other public health systems, as well as each student’s competency development within their area of specialization
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Assess population health of Baltimore City and using the core public health functions as a framework, develop strategies and approaches to address public health concerns
  2. Apply public health knowledge and theory to address specific public health challenges in Baltimore City
  3. Use appropriate strategies to develop plans and materials to communicate public health information to targeted Baltimore City audiences
  4. Assess the efficacy of specific Baltimore City public health programs and policies
  5. Advance personal career growth and development using the core competencies for public health professionals as a framework
Special Comments

Students will be expected to engage in significant fieldwork outside of class through attendance and participation in meetings and other events and activities as required. Due to the nature of this course, students may not add this class after the first session.
