Jimmie Lou DeBakeyLetter from the Director

Jimmie Lou DeBakey, Director of Constituent Relations

It has been quite the whirlwind! Between the news of the $300 million gift to create the Bloomberg American Health Initiative, a star-studded Centennial celebration, Dean Klag's announcement and Alumni Day, it has been nothing short of busy. On top of all that, we officially kicked off our Global Alumni Network! I am so grateful to be part of this community, especially in this first year of our second century...

Nearly 200 alums, faculty, and students came from near and far to be part of our 2016 Alumni Day. A fantastic luncheon recognizing our JHU Alumni Association award winners gave attendees a wonderful opportunity to hear from Dean Klag personally, as well as from Sonia Sarkar, one of the members of the Global Alumni Network steering committee. Sonia offered details for the committee’s vision of how to keep our alumni engaged and active, and how the Office of Constituent Relations will execute those ideals.

We followed up our awards lunch with a spectacular program with Nobel laureate Peter Agre, who spoke on scientific diplomacy in Cuba and the university’s long-standing relationship with the country. He invited a colleague of his, Luis Alberto Montera Cabrero, from the Universidad de la Habana, to share his experiences as well, and we had a robust discussion and Q&A session.

If you’ve ever had a chance to see the Baltimore institution Stoop Storytelling, you would have known what a treat our alumni had in store. Seven story-tellers shared their personal experiences in public health, and the stories ranged from heartbreaking to humorous to challenging. We could think of no better way to represent the diversity and breadth of experience our alums have than by showcasing it through Stoop Stories.

Finally, at our networking reception, we had a very special guest: William H. Welch! If you haven’t had a chance, check out our great photo album from our reception at the end of the day. If you look carefully, you might even find a photo of your dedicated constituent relations team…

We keep hearing that our 2016 Alumni Day was the best yet – which only means we’ll have to work that much harder to top it next year! Save the date for Alumni Day 2017: September 15!
