In the recent weeks, many international applicants have been asking questions regarding the English Language Proficiency Policy. Here are some key points to remember.

  1. All TOEFL and IELTS scores must be valid. These tests expire two years after the test date.
  2. A master’s degree in the US does not qualify for an English Language Proficiency Waiver. The degree must be a completed four-year degree, such as a bachelor’s or doctoral degree.
  3. TOEFL scores should be submitted directly to SOPHAS using code 5688. Applicants with IELTS should e-mail a scanned copy of the score report to
  4. English Language Waivers are very rare. Please plan to take the test prior to your program’s deadline as testing sites have limited exam dates, times and locations.

For the full policy, please review the International Applicants’ webpage.

If you have any questions regarding the policy or additional requirements for International Applicants, please feel free to e-mail or call the office at 410-955-3543.

December 1 Deadline and Supporting Materials
As many applicants know, one of our largest deadlines is tomorrow, Saturday, December 1. As the hours count down, I’d like to relieve some concerns. All programs have a grace period for supporting documents, such as letters of recommendations, test scores, transcripts and WES evaluations to be posted to your application. Please do not worry if they are not into SOPHAS by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on December 1. If you’ve submitted your application, you will find the supporting document deadline on your personal page checklist tab.

Checking Your Application Status
You may always check the status of your application by logging into your personal site. Please be sure to check the e-mail you used for your SOPHAS account for communication on your personal site and if your application has been sent for review.

Processing Delay
A final note, since December 1 is on a Saturday, your applications will have a slight delay in processing. Our team is coming in Monday morning prepared to answer e-mails from the weekend and process your applications. This delay will not affect your application in anyway. We appreciate your patience, but please let us know via e-mail or phone (410-955-3543) if you have any questions.

December 1 is a deadline for many of the degree programs at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. All doctoral program applications are due by 11:59 p.m. eastern time on December 1, with the exception to the PhD in Clinical Investigation.

The following masters’ programs also have a December 1 deadline.

*MHS in Biostatistics
*ScM in Biostatistics
MSPH/RD in International Health
*MPH full-time
and Duel Degree Options
*MPH online/part-time with a June start

*Programs have final deadlines that extend beyond the dates listed.

A common misconception for applicants is often when to submit the application. Submitting the application should happen once the Personal Information, Academic History, Supporting Information and Program Materials sections are complete and correct. The recommendation letters, transcripts and test scores can be accepted after you’ve submitted the application.

On the “My Application” tab, completed sections will have green infographics. If all four are green, the “Submit Application” tab will have a red circle with a number in it of the number of applications ready to be submitted. In the screenshot below I have one designation and all my materials are complete.

When you go to the “Submit Application” tab, the application that is ready to be submitted has a full green bar and has a check mark.

And just a reminder, submit early!
