Tomorrow is one of our most common deadlines, and with it comes a very common question. “Does my application have to be verified by the deadline?”

For the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the answer is no. Your application must only be submitted by 11:59 p.m., or midnight, Eastern Standard Time (EST) on the day of the deadline. We encourage you to submit your application as early as possible as verification can take several weeks. As long as all materials have been received by the supporting document deadline, your application will be reviewed. You will find the supporting document deadline on your personalized website under the Checklist for Application tab.

The office will be closed for the holiday on Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24. We will return at our regular hours on Monday, November 27.

I normally post deadline alerts two weeks before a deadline. I’m posting this one a few days early to make up for the turkey coma that will ensue over Thanksgiving so you still have a full two-week reminder.

December 1 is a big deadline day for the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, but also for many other programs utilizing SOPHAS. Admissions Services highly recommends not waiting until December 1 to submit your application. Also keep in mind that the application is not submitted until the application fee has been processed. Clicking submit at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time would most likely result in a late application.

*Students applying to these programs should choose the PhD Biomedical Sciences in Public Health as the degree designation in SOPHAS. You can then select the degree(s) to which you are interested in applying. Admission decisions will be made separately by each degree program. In your personal statement, please clearly express why you are interested in applying to your selected program(s).

Last year, the Bloomberg School was proud to award two full tuition scholarships to Syrian refugees for the full-time MPH program (read the blog about it here). I’m happy to say that the Center for Humanitarian Health will once again support a displaced student. This year, the student can come from Syria, South Sudan, Afghanistan or Somalia.

To apply, all applicants must complete the MPH application and notify the Scholarship Program of their desire to be considered for the scholarship by emailing the MPH office at mphprog@jhu.edu.

Applications are due no later than December 1. For more information on the scholarship, please review the displacement requirements on the Center for Humanitarian Health’s website.

If independent research in biomedical or public health is your interest and you’re an undergraduate student, the Diversity Summer Internship Program (DSIP) is a perfect way to spend your summer. For 10 weeks, undergraduate students from across the country come to the Bloomberg School to be mentored under Johns Hopkins researchers and ultimately gain valuable experience in a collaborative, challenging and fun environment. At the end of the 10 weeks, students present their research during a poster session. Some students have also taken their research to conferences. Included in the summer internship is housing and a minimum stipend of $3,000 for meals.

Applications are due by February 1, 2018. A completed application, two or three letters of recommendation, a resume and personal statement are all required. Past successful applicants showed an interest in pursuing graduate studies. Applicants will be notified of decisions mid-March.
