Admissions Information
Applications for all 2021 OPAL programs are open as of August 15, 2020.
The MAS application deadline is June 1, 2021. All supporting documents are due by June 15, 2021.
Please note that applications are open through July 1, 2021 for all OPAL Certificates, including the Certificate in Global Tobacco Control, but consideration for additional IGTC scholarship funding for the Global Tobacco Control program has an application deadline of January 15, 2021. For additional details, please refer to the program page linked in the table below.
Degree applications are processed through the Schools of Public Health Application Services (SOPHAS). Certificate applications are processed through the Schools of Public Health Application Services (SOPHAS) Express.
OPAL programs are open for one application cycle each year - all programs begin in the fall.
Admissions Requirements
Requirements for all Master of Applied Science Degree Programs
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
- Official transcripts from all college-level institutions attended, regardless of number of credits earned or if the grades appear on your home institution's transcript, must be submitted directly to SOPHAS.
- International academic records must undergo a course-by-course credential evaluation via WES. Once complete, the evaluation should be sent directly to SOPHAS.
- Complete SOPHAS application
- Three letters of recommendation
- Statement of Purpose and Objectives

Requirements for all Certificate Programs
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
- Transcripts from all college-level institutions attended, regardless of number of credits earned or if the grades appear on your home institution's transcript, must be submitted directly to JHSPH Admissions Office. Applications can be reviewed with unofficial transcripts, but official copies must be submitted if admitted to a program.
- International academic records must undergo a course-by-course credential evaluation via WES. Once complete, the evaluation should be sent directly to JHSPH Admissions by WES.
- Complete SOPHAS Express application

International Students
Most applicants from countries where English is not the official language must submit scores of an English language proficiency test. Applicants to the Certificate in Global Tobacco Control may be required to have a personal interview, in lieu of submitting test scores.
To fulfill this requirement, we will accept scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

TOEFL/IELTS Exceptions
Admissions will waive this requirement for degree applicants only if:
- a student has completed a four-year degree from an accredited U.S. institution
- a student is from a country listed on our quick reference list

Keep in mind that it may take longer to process your application if you attended several academic institutions and need multiple transcripts, or if you attended an international institution and need to provide a course by course credential evaluation, and be sure to allow sufficient processing time. Financial Aid and Tuition
Tuition is assessed per term by the Office of Student Accounts & Business Services. OPAL programs have a competitive price point.
- 2020-21 tuition is $1,197 per credit*
The OPAL Scholarship - All students enrolled in an OPAL MAS or Certificate program will be awarded this scholarship, in the amount of $460 per credit*. This scholarship is designated for tuition costs only and is disbursed incrementally for each credit taken towards required coursework.Your admission application also serves as your OPAL Scholarship application; therefore, no additional forms are required.
- The Certificate in Global Tobacco Control has additional scholarship funding available for eligible students in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. This certificate is offered in collaboration with the Institute for Global Tobacco Control; please refer to their website for additional information regarding scholarship eligibility, and relevant deadlines for submission of applications.
*Tuition rates for the following academic year are reassessed and approved each spring.
Beyond scholarships, the Financial Aid Office provides assistance with federal and private loans.
