The Master of Applied Science in Spatial Analysis for Public Health is a fully online degree program offered by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Admissions Information

APPLICATION DEADLINE: June 1, 2020 for Fall 2020 Applications

The application for the MAS in Spatial Analysis for Public Health will open in SOPHAS on August 15, 2019. The priority deadline to submit an application is Wednesday April 15, 2020. Applications are accepted on an ongoing, space-available basis after the priority deadline until Monday, June 1, 2020. All applications must be completed (includes all supporting documents received/processed, as well as verification) in SOPHAS on or before July 1, 2020 for consideration in the Fall 2020 cohort. International students will need to allow additional time for processing of WES course by course credential evaluations prior to the noted deadlines. We recommend that applicants begin the WES credential evaluation process no later than April 1, 2020 if they wish to apply for Fall 2020 programs. Spatial Analysis and Public Health

Location information, now routinely collected with health data and also obtainable from advancing technologies, is providing a gateway for researchers and practitioners to incorporate the power of geography into public health. Maps have become a powerful and popular mechanism for public health research and practice, not only for conveying information and synthesizing data from multiple sources, but for leading to new and novel directions for analyzing and interpreting public health data. 

What is Spatial Analysis and how is it different than GIS?

There are many definitions of spatial analysis; broadly, it is any use or interpretation of geographic information. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a component of spatial analysis, but it is more primarily focused on the mapping software as a tool for integrating, manipulating, and displaying spatial data. This program in Spatial Analysis covers a more encompassing set of skills, introducing and reinforcing the spatial science paradigm – a unifying comprehensive approach that includes components of spatial data, Geographic Information Systems and spatial statistics.

Spatial analysis is an emerging field, with advancing technologies and evolving applications that are vast and paramount to addressing public health issues.
