Courses are available through Coursera, an online educational platform that includes interactive forums to support community interaction among students, professors, and teaching assistants..  Course materials including video lectures, readings, and assignments are available through OpenCourseWare.

The People, Power and Pride of Public Health

This course from Johns Hopkins University is designed for workers in local and state health departments and is taught by Joshua Sharfstein MD and Beth Resnick MPH, DrPH, in 3 modules. Course material includes information about public health achievements such as vaccines, air bags and car seats, Women Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program, and use of public health tools such as data and policy. It also contains interviews of public health leaders such as Professor Susan Baker, Dr. Mathuram Santhosham, Dr. Michael Fraser and Congressman Henry Waxman, and details of day-to-day public health work in the community from public health workers.

The course from Johns Hopkins University is taught by Jason Farley PhD, MPH, CRNP. This is a course on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for prevention of HIV. Specialized medical knowledge or training is not required for the course.

This course by Keeve Nachman PhD, MHS, Robert S. Lawrence MD and Pamela Rhubart Berg is an introductory one that talks about food systems, food production and food policies in the US.

Major Depression in the Population: A Public Health Approach

This course is directed at the general public, as well as public health professionals and professional counselors handling patients with major depression. It is taught by William W. Eaton PhD, Wietse A. Tol PhD and Ramin Mojtabai MD. It discusses descriptive epidemiology, epidemiologic methods, risk factors and issues related to access to treatment for major depression.

Public Health in Humanitarian Crises

This course taught by Mija Ververs MD, MPH and Gilbert Burnham MD, PhD is an introductory course designed to teach public health roles in humanitarian emergencies. This includes the public health management of population needs arising from displacement due to natural disasters and conflict. This includes water, sanitation, nutrition, food security, disease management, emergency care and shelter in such situations.

This course taught by Anna Kalbarczyk MPH is intended for international travelers to low and middle-income countries. It teaches the basics about health and safety.

Chemicals and Health

About this course: This course covers chemicals in our environment and in our bodies and how they impact our health. It addresses policies and practices related to chemicals, particularly related to how they get into our bodies, what they do when they get there, and how we measure them and their impact on our health.

Baltimore Food Systems: A Case Study of Urban Food Environments

This courses challenges students to look closely at the environment of Baltimore City’s complex food systems and asks them to consider what it would take to improve these systems to assure access for all to nutritious, adequate, affordable food.
