Renal Disease Epidemiology Training Program

Director: Mike Klag, MD, MPH; Co-Director: Neil R. Powe, MD, MPH, MBA
The Renal Disease Epidemiology Training Program is funded by a National Research Training Award (T32). With the incidence and prevalence of end-stage renal disease on the rise, the need for experts in renal disease epidemiology remains great. Research in this area can help to reduce mortality, morbidity, and costs associated with renal disease by studies of etiology, prevention, and treatment at the community level. The overall program goal is to combine epidemiology with mainstream molecular and clinical research in renal disease.

The number of fellows under the training grant has steadily grown. With much interest in the field from top nephrologists around the world, the competitiveness of the slots has ensured high quality applicants over the years. Increased funding has increased the program’s one postdoctoral slot a year to the current three, with an addition of a postdoctoral slot for experts specializing in pediatric nephrology. Although the program is headquartered at the Welch Center, it also has ties to the Department of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health as well as the Divisions of General Internal Medicine, Adult Nephrology, and Pediatric Nephrology at the School of Medicine.
