This program focuses on inter-disciplinary training in the epidemiology of the leading cause of death in the US. The program integrates knowledge of all aspects of the disease: biology, behavior, treatment and prevention. Training emphasizes a collaborative approach and active participation in research. A number of large ongoing cohort studies and clinical trials provide a rich environment for the conduct of research. The main didactic course focuses on risk factors for cardiovascular disease and strategies for prevention. Seminar-style courses offer a more in-depth understanding of disease pathophysiology and clinical management (field trip course). Many trainees are based in the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology, and Clinical Research, and are mentored by individuals active in both population-based and clinical research. Among other outstanding collaborations, the program benefits from close ties with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine divisions of General Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Endocrinology & Metabolism. Tuition and stipend funding for doctoral candidates and post-doctoral trainees (Master's after MD or another degree or research after a PhD) is available on a merit basis through an NIH training program for US citizens or permanent residents.
