The Welch Center collaborates frequently with other entities both in and outside the University to combine expertise for common goals. Key partnerships are briefly listed below.
Nine Welch Center faculty have primary appointments in the School of Public Health, and 17 others have joint appointments (14 in the Department of Epidemiology). Welch Center faculty collaborate in research and training with many Department of Epidemiology faculty members on the topics of infectious disease, cancer, genetics, and general epidemiology. These collaborations have been crucial to continuing advances in clinical epidemiology research and training.
The Welch Center also benefits from collaboration with other departments in the School of Public Health, including the Departments of Health Policy and Management, Mental Health, Biostatistics, International Health, Population and Family Sciences, and Environmental Health. Faculty also collaborate with the Center for Clinical Trials and the Center for Health Disparities Solutions.
Clinical research would not be possible without the knowledge and expertise of experienced clinicians in a variety of fields. Welch Center faculty work closely with the School of Medicine, particularly the Departments of Medicine (many core faculty have primary appointments in the Division of General Internal Medicine), Anesthesiology and Critical Care, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Surgery, Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery, Radiology, Pathology, Oncology, Psychiatry, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and Ophthalmology. A primary collaboration with the School of Medicine is the Graduate Training Program in Clinical Investigation (GTPCI). Initiated at Johns Hopkins in 1993 and currently directed by Drs. N. Franklin Adkinson and Charles Flexner, this program was one of the first to offer an advanced degree for clinical postdoctoral fellows seeking a degree in clinical investigation. Drs. Brancati, Furth, Klag, and Powe serve on its advisory committee and mentor trainees in the program. The Clinical Research Methods course taught by Drs. Klag and Guallar, and the Outcomes and Effectiveness Research Course taught by Dr. Powe, are required courses for GTPCI trainees. Dr. Furth chairs the GTPCI's evaluation team, and Dr. Powe is on its admission committee. Welch Center faculty also collaborate with members of the Institute of Genetic Medicine.
Welch Center faculty have collaborated with faculty members in the Center for Nursing Research in the School of Nursing in a variety of ways, including research on hypertension, diabetes and cholesterol management, health and healthcare disparities, mental health, training programs, and interchange of faculty for teaching. They also have mentored junior faculty and trainees in nursing.
The General Clinical Research Center, funded by NIH (directed by Dr. Chris Saudek under PI Dr. Klag), provides the infrastructure to conduct clinical and population-based research at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. It has contributed to the development and maintenance of our corps of clinical investigators and training of faculty physicians, trainees, and other health professionals in clinical research. Center components consist of an adult in-patient unit, an adult out-patient unit, and a pediatric unit. The Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Neurobehavioral Research Unit also is served by GCRC biostatisticians (Dr. Astor). Other components include a bionutrition research facility, sleep laboratory, core laboratory, cardiovascular laboratory, and an exercise physiology and body composition core. Dr. Josef Coresh directs the Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Computing Core, which includes statisticians and epidemiologists from the Center (Eliseo Guallar, DrPH, Brad Astor, PhD, MPH, and Kathryn Carson, ScM). Dr. Nae-Yuh Wang has recently become statistician for the Johns Hopkins Bayview GCRC.
Welch Center faculty also collaborate with faculty in the Berman Institute of Bioethics and in the Johns Hopkins Urban Health Institute. |
