The Welch Center’s H.C. Jessica Yeh, PhD, began the year being deluged by requests for comments and interviews from media outlets around the world following the publication of her article “Smoking, Smoking Cessation, and Risk for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus” in the January 5, 2010 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine. Dr. Yeh and her co-authors, who include the Welch Center’s Dr. Nae-Yuh Wang and Dr. Fred Brancati, found that while cigarette smoking is a known predictor of type 2 diabetes, stopping smoking leads to an even higher risk of diabetes in the short term. The authors recommend for smokers at risk for diabetes, smoking cessation should be coupled with strategies for diabetes prevention and early detection. The investigators also stress that smoking prevention should be superior to smoking cessation.
To date, Dr. Yeh has been interviewed by media from eight countries--including the BBC, CNN, Israeli Radio, the Baltimore Sun, the Los Angeles Times and a medical newspaper in the Ukraine--and has received comments and reprint requests from scientists in 19 countries on five continents.
