Student Involvement Opportunities with the WCHPC

The WCHPC enthusiastically welcomes student participation in our work. Options for involvement with the work of the WCHPC are available; some opportunities entail paid employment, other project involvement can be structured as independent Special Studies courses (research, or practice).  Still other activities are less formal, but also serve as venues for faculty and students to collaborate.

Spotlight on Students

Jenna Riis   Jenna Riis, Doctoral Candidate

Jenna Riis works on a WCHPC project examining relations between state school policies and childhood obesity in the United States. Working with Donna Strobino, Holly Grason, and Cynthia Minkovitz, Jenna has conducted extensive data analyses and collaborated in product development.

Jenna also has partnered with faculty on a study focused on pediatricians' involvement in community child health as part of the Dyson Initiative National Evaluation. For the past year, she joined Sara Johnson and Anne Riley in their examination of the interplay of biology, stress, and early childhood health.

Caitlin Martin    Caitlin Martin, MD Candidate

Caitlin Martin's internship with the WCHPC focused on formative research with urban youth in Baltimore to understand their descriptions of teen dating violence, and their preferences for helpseeking. Together with Center faculty (Michele Decker), and in partnership with the Baltimore City Health Department (adjunct faculty Avril Melissa Houston), Caitlin refined qualitative analyses, sought insight from local stakeholders on interpretation of findings, and conducted dissemination activities including manuscript development and presentations. This work represents a vital step in informing future directions for teen dating violence research and programming in Baltimore City and beyond.

Current Opportunities

Listed below are several project areas where we are seeking partnerships with students in the 2011-2012 academic year.  Specific opportunities will vary over the year.  As new studies and practice activities are launched, the WCHPC website will be updated accordingly to reflect these changes and new student collaboration opportunities.

The Division of Research, Training and Education (DRTE) of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) is currently recruiting public health students to participate in the development of the MCH Navigator, a new learning portal for maternal and child health professionals. Students will locate, screen, and categorize existing web-based MCH learning resources for inclusion in the MCH Navigator system. Work will be conducted independently, with orientation and regular communications between students and DRTE staff via web conferencing, telephone, and/or email. Minimum commitment 5 hrs/week; maximum 8 hours/week. Please contact Holly Grason (hgrason@jhsph.edu) if you are interested.

Drs. Sai Ma and Cynthia Minkovitz seek a research assistant on a project examining state dental practice laws to promote accesses to oral health care services. This work is being conducted in collaboration with colleagues from the Children's Dental Health Project. Please contact Cynthia Minkovitz (cminkovi@jhsph.edu) for further information.

The WCHPC seeks a student interested in a special studies, mentored activity focused on leisure and recreational activities among foreign born youth in the United States. The student will conduct a literature review and contribute to manuscript preparation. This project is being conducted in collaboration with colleagues at the Health Resources and Services Administration. Please contact Holly Grason (hgrason@jhsph.edu) if you are interested.
