Student Involvement Opportunities with the WCHPC

The WCHPC enthusiastically welcomes student participation in our work.  Options for involvement with the work of the WCHPC are available; some opportunities entail paid employment, other project involvement can be structured as independent Special Studies courses (research, or practice).  Still other activities are less formal, but also serve as venues for faculty and students to collaborate.

Listed below are several project areas where we are seeking partnerships with students in the 2007-08 academic year.  Specific opportunities will vary over the year.  As new studies and practice activities are launched, the WCHPC website will be updated accordingly to reflect these changes and new student collaboration opportunities.

WCHPC faculty Holly Grason and Donna Strobino are seeking to collaborate over the next 4 to 6 months with a student who is experienced using SPSS for small data set analysis. Data to be analyzed are from the national survey on the Title V MCH and CSHCN workforce.  All 59 U.S. jurisdictions surveyed May-June ’08. Tasks include item analysis and table preparation and drafting very brief written summaries of selected components of the workforce survey. Approximately $2,000 is available to support this student work. Our student partner will have opportunity to be a co-author on resultant journal manuscript(s). Beginning date is around July 1, 2008; work may extend through the remainder of this calendar year. If you are interested in working on this project, please contact Holly Grason ( hgrason@jhsph.edu; 410-502-5443; Room E4140) as soon as possible.

The WCHPC joined the National Forum on Early Childhood Program Evaluation to expand its meta-analysis database. As part of the Evaluation, the WCHPC will build a database on the effectiveness of early child health interventions.  Faculty members taking the lead on this project are Sai Ma and Bernard Guyer. The project covers one calendar year- 2008. We are currently in the process of hiring two doctoral students. For more information please contact Sai Ma, sma@jhsph.edu.

Holly Grason is looking for student assistance to prepare a policy research brief on Reducing Exposure to Environmental Toxicants Before Birth. Basic scientific research is completed; work would involve collecting information from state MCH programs regarding their work related to exposure to environmental toxicants, and reframing and translating journal manuscript material for state and/or local MCH professionals concerned with the health of women of reproductive age.  The end product will be a widely disseminated WCHPC publication.  Funds are available to support the student work.  Contact Holly Grason ( hgrason@jhsph.edu; Room E4140).

Student internship opportunity for School Health Assistance Program Project at Nemours Health and Prevention Services (NHPS).  The intern will be responsible for investigating the use of technology to deliver technical assistance in the area of health promotion. He/she will assist NHPS in learning more about the effectiveness of using the web and other forms of technology for school health planning team such as the Coordinated School Health (CSH) model. This project will also include an analysis of what tools/ elements would make the website more attractive to school health team members and possibility development of some of these tools.  Please click here for contact information and more information about the internship opportunity.

The Perinatal Network of Maryland is seeking contributors to its newsletter.  The network (sponsored by the state health department) is looking for individuals wishing to prepare synopses of current scientific articles on topics of high newsworthiness such as cutting edge research reports.  The research synopsis articles should include the author’s comments of relevance of the research findings for public health practitioners and/or clinical care providers.  Previous issues of the newsletter can be viewed at: http://www.fha.state.md.us/mch/html/perinatalnetwork.html.  WCHPC faculty will provide support and guidance to JHSPH students wishing to submit articles to the Perinatal Network newsletter.  Contact Holly Grason ( hgrason@jhsph.edu) for additional information.

As part of an ongoing collaboration between Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Nemours Health and Prevention Services, we seek a student to conduct a literature review on Health Promotion Strategies at a School District Level. Data sources will include publications and web information regarding efforts that have been implemented and evaluated at the school district level to implement health promotion programs, practices, and policies—with a particular focus on the strategies involved to work successfully with school districts. The student will work closely with colleagues at Nemours Health and Prevention Services (http://www.nemours.org/internet?pid=5). The final product should be completed by mid-November 2006 and special studies credit is available.  For further information, please contact: Jamie Powers 302-444-9121 or jpowers@nemours.org.
