
JHSPH researchers conduct field trials to assess vaccine efficacy and effectiveness at diverse settings around the world. These studies involve large field sites, often enrolling thousands of participants and are typically designed to assess a range of health outcomes. Support for these large studies comes from a variety of sources including the WHO, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, PATH, CDC, National Institutes of Health and the pharmaceutical industry. In addition to assessing the direct benefits of vaccination, some field trial designs allow investigators to measure indirect effects, such as the impact of vaccination on disease prevalence among unimmunized community members, cost-effectiveness, long-term impact of vaccines in routine use settings and to gain new insights into host-pathogen interaction.
