In the summer of 2004, the Urban Health Institute was awarded a grant from the Maryland Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism and the Corporation for National and Community Service to place community health workers (CHW) in East Baltimore. Under this grant, AmeriCorps members serve as community health workers. We are currently recruiting for a new class of CHWs. If you're interested in applying, please click here to begin the process. The current cohort includes nine dynamic individuals, all working towards the common goal of improving the health and well-being of our neighbors: Robert Allen Robert is a native of East Baltimore. He the longest serving of our CHWs and has a passion for his work. This proud grandfather of 13 and great-grandfather of 2 wants to use his AmeriCorps education award for training in chemical dependency counseling. Annie CoplesAnnie is a native of Kinston, North Carolina. She has lived in Baltimore for many years and has experience in the health care field.. Entertainment writing is one of Annie’s hobbies. Shanté GilmoreShanté is a Baltimore native and has a BS in biology from Morgan State University. She hopes to continue her education in public health. Shanté enjoys sewing and makes costumes for her dogs. Ruby Parker Ruby is a Mississippi native who has lived in Baltimore for about four years. Her commitment to community service led her pastor to recommend that she look into our program. Ruby is an excellent cook and is interested in turning traditional Southern dishes into more healthy fare. Mary Prater Mary is a Baltimore native. Before becoming a CHW, Mary worked in the billing departments of several area hospitals. She enjoys deep sea fishing. Jessica StewartJessica is a San Francisco native and grew up in East Baltimore. She loves reading thrillers, and more than anything else, just wants to help people. Jessica would like to use her AmeriCorps education award to obtain training in the field of social work. Lora TullLora is a Louisiana native who comes to Baltimore by way of Arkansas and New York. She has lived in Baltimore for more years than she cares to mention. Lora learned about our program while refurbishing computers at EBTRC and is dedicated to a life of service to others. |
