Who is eligible to attend the Summer Institute?
The Summer Institute provides an opportunity for graduate study to degree candidates as well as individuals taking selected courses for professional development.  Institute participants include health care professionals, those who are considering a career in public health, primary health care practitioners, physicians in training (including preventive medicine residents and medical students) as well as students. Participants are either seeking courses and training for professional development, or degree candidates from Hopkins as well as from other US schools of public health taking courses towards their degree program.

What is the application deadline?
Space permitting, applications are accepted until the start of (a) class(es). However, students are strongly encouraged to register two weeks prior to the first day of class to ensure receiving course confirmation and to avoid cancellations. A $50 late fee will be charged for applications received after June 5, 2007.

Are the courses available for academic credit?
All Summer Institute courses are offered for academic credit. Institute participants who wish to take courses for academic credit, but are not currently enrolled in a degree program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, may register as a Special Student Limited and receive academic credit.

Academic credit requires completion of a separate official School registration form, which will be provided at Orientation to those students who indicate academic credit on their application form

Students registered as special students limited may accumulate a maximum of 16 credits total. After 16 credits have been earned, application to and acceptance in special student regular or degree status at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is required.

What are the tuition and fees?
Academic Credit: The tuition rate for academic credit is $728* per course credit unit. The number of credits for each course is listed at the end of the course description.

Non-Credit:  For most courses, the tuition rate for non-credit tuition is $350 per course credit unit. 

Housing Fees: The rate for a single room for the full three week session $1200*; for a one week session the fee is $360. Required Meal Plan (breakfast and dinner every day) included in charges.  Charges include weekend stay for participants registered for more than a one-week session.

When is payment due? 
Full payment is requested with the application.  Payments made after June 5 will be subject to a $50 processing fee.  All applications must be accompanied by payment in full, or a non-refundable $125 deposit (applied towards total tuition).  Housing payment must be submitted with the application if housing is requested.  Applications received without full payment (or deposit) will not be processed.  Total payments must be received on or before June 5, 2007.  Payments made by personal check must be received by June 5. Checks should be made payable to the JHU Graduate Summer Institute of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and must be in U.S. dollars drawn on a U.S. bank.  Any bank charges incurred for processing will be charged to the registrant.  Discover, MasterCard, and Visa payments are accepted.
 
What forms of payment do you accept at the Summer Institute (BSPH)?
We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, cash, personal and business checks, purchase orders/contract forms.

Are tuition/housing fees payable on arrival or departure?
The balance of fees is requested with the application in order to expedite the registration procedure.  All registrants should be prepared to provide full payment to the Graduate Summer Institute for any balance of their tuition in U.S. dollars by June 5, 2007.   Participants financed by such organizations as the federal government, WHO, etc., should arrange with their agencies to provide supporting documents (purchase orders, training nomination forms, etc) along with submission of their applications.

Are there any extra costs I should be aware of?
There are no additional fees except for planned social events, for those participants interested in attending.  Textbooks are not included in the Summer Institute charges.

I’ve taken a class(s) for credit.  When/how can I find out my grades?
Students who register for academic credit will be able to get a transcript of their Summer Institute grades. To have transcripts forwarded to another institution, a written request must be submitted to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Registrar's Office at least ten working days before the transcript is needed. Students who want Summer Institute courses applied to degree programs at other institutions should consult with their home institution regarding transfer of credits and credit conversion.

Will classes be held on July 4th?
Yes.  Classes scheduled on July 4 will be held.

Do you have free parking at the Bloomberg School of Public Health?
There are a few parking garages around the School of Public Health.  We recommend you park in the Washington Street Garage on the corner of E. Monument and Washington Streets.  There is an hourly fee charged to park in the garages. Booklets of parking coupons are available for purchase, at Orientation and in the Summer Institute office – W6508.

Do you have computers available for general use?
The School of Public Health has 2 computer labs that are available for general use when they are not occupied by a class.  There is also a computer room in Wolman Hall, open from 7:00a.m. – 11:00p.m. daily. 

Will we have library access?
The temporary ID badge which will be issued to you at Orientation will allow Summer Institute participants to access the libraries on campus.  Books may not be borrowed by Summer Institute participants.

Are there athletic facilities on campus?
Yes.  Summer Institute participants may use either the Denton Cooley Athletic Center located on the JHMI campus or the Newton H. White Jr. Athletic Center located on the Homewood campus.  Participants will be required to pay a small fee.

What types of rooms are available?
We offer single rooms in a shared dormitory suite.  Suites offer a private bedroom, with shared bathroom and living room. 

What is check-in time?  What is check-out time?
Check-in to the dormitories is on the Sunday of each session, and check-out is by 10:00a.m. on Saturday.  Charges include weekend stay for participants registered for more than a one-week session.  

During what hours is reception open?
The conference desk is open 24 hours a day.

Will the rooms be serviced everyday?
Bed linen is changed once a week for participants who stay for longer than 6 days.  Towels and washcloths will be changed every two days.

Are there telephones and televisions in the rooms?
There is local telephone service in the rooms for no charge.  Long distance calls can be placed from your room telephone and charged to your AT&T calling card, AT&T Universal charge card, MasterCard, Visa, any prepaid calling card, debit card, or credit card that has a 1-800 or local access number.  There are no televisions in the rooms.

Do the dorms have laundry facilities? 
Charles Coomons has coin operated laundry facilities that are always open.

Do the rooms have central air?
The rooms have individually controlled cooling and heating units.

How far is the shuttle bus stop from Charles Commons?   How often does the shuttle run?
The shuttle bus stop is located in front of  the Charles Commons, outside of the Barnes and Noble Bookstore on St. Paul Street.  During peak hours, the shuttle bus runs approximately every 5 minutes.

Do you have a pick-up service from the Airport?  How do I get from the airport to Charles Commons?
The Summer Institute does not provide transportation to and from the airport. We suggest participants make use of the ground transportation services offered by BWI Airport.
