Financial Aid

Application Procedures

To apply for federal student aid:

  1. File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid: www.fafsa.ed.gov. Indicate that the information should be sent to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health—Code E00234.

  2. Submit the 2012-2013 Public Health Federal Student Aid Application for the 2012-2013 academic year (July 1, 2012 - May 17, 2013).  Applicants for the 2012-2013 academic year should fill out the 2012-2013 FAFSA and the 2012-2013 Public Health Federal Student Aid Application.  All new students who begin their academic program in the summer of 2012 should complete the 2012-2013 FAFSA and the 2012-2013 Public Health Federal Student Aid.

  3. If selected for verification by the U.S. Department of Education for the 2012-2013 academic year, you will need to submit the 2012-2013 Verfication Worksheet and a 2011 IRS tax return transcript(s). See section C on the Verification Worksheet for details.

As a graduate student you meet the federal definition of an independent student; thus, you do not need to provide parental data on the FAFSA.

We recommend that you complete your federal tax return before filling out your FAFSA. However, you do not need to file your federal tax return with the Internal Revenue Service before you submit your FAFSA. If you have not yet filed your tax return, you may estimate your income and tax information on the FAFSA. When you file your tax return, you must update any income or tax information that changed since you filed your FAFSA.

Stipend payments should be reported as taxable income on your FAFSA.

To apply for Maryland State Aid you must submit your FAFSA by March 1 and

  • in Step One: Indicate that you are a Maryland resident
  • in Step Five: You must list a Maryland school as your first choice

Verification

A financial aid applicant who is selected for verification must submit all required verification documents to the Financial Aid Office (FAO) before an aid award can be finalized.  The deadline to submit all required documentation to the FAO is the student's last day of half-time (6 or more credits per term) enrollment or the last day of classes for the fourth term of the academic year, whichever date occurs first.

To apply for private loans:

Students who are not eligible for federal financial assistance may apply for private loans. The application procedure is as follows.

  1. Complete an on-line loan application through a private loan provider.

  2. Submit the 2012-2013 Public Health Private Loan Supplemental Application for the 2012-2013 academic year (July 1, 2012- May 17, 2013) after your private loan application has been fully approved with the lender of your choice. Notify the Financial Aid Office of your lender.
