Medical Students and the Baltimore Community

Medical students at Hopkins have a long tradition of involvement in the Baltimore community, and a number of opportunities exist for getting involved.

InterAction
Medical students have organized over 20 student-run groups that are actively involved in the community, which are coordinated by a body of students known as the InterAction Council, or "InterAction."  InterAction works closely with SOURCE to provide resources and funding to recognized service-based student groups.  Visit the InterAction homepage for more information about how to get involved.

Service-based Student Groups
From community outreach to sex education, there are plenty of opportunities to engage with Baltimore alongside fellow students.  Check out our list of service-based student groups within the School of Medicine, which receive funding and support from SOURCE and InterAction.

SOURCE Partners
Many of our community partners focus on providing medical- and health-related services to Baltimore.  Browse through our directory to read more about organizations you can work with.

Medically-related Involvement Opportunities
Read more about special opportunities for community involvement that may be of special interest for medical students.  Also, be sure to sign up for our SOURCE Weekly Service Scoop for regular updates on community involvement opportunities from over 100 of our community partners (email source@jhsph.edu with “Subscribe” in the subject line).

Academic Opportunities for Community-based Learning
When combined with preparation and reflection, community service can be a powerful component to academic learning. By responding to community-identified concerns and learning about the context in these issues arise, students are able to fully explore the connection between community involvement and their academic coursework.
