Sponsors English-As-a-Second-Language classes and tutoring in English.
Makes referrals to bilingual services for those needing employment, housing, food or clothing.
Assists those with medical, dental or mental health problems, as well as those with immigration-related legal difficulties.
The Health Services Center, through a Consortium Agreement with St. Joseph Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Medical, and St. Agnes Hospital offers primary care adult, pediatric and well-woman care. Bilingual volunteers have the opportunity to provide interpretation services for non-bilingual providers. Volunteers may also contribute through individual projects such as the development of patient education materials.

Our ESL program is unique in the area because we offer flexible schedules for volunteers and students. Our drop-in classes are comprised of small groups and one-on-one teaching. The ESL program also includes short-term structured classes in partnership with Baltimore City Community College and a computer lab. - Tutoring (M-F during the day as well as Tues and Thurs evenings 7 - 9 pm and Sat's 10 am - 12 noon)
- Take clients to medical appointments
- Organize health fairs and special events
- Act as translators, assisting with legal, medical and other important appointments
- Provide medical services on the new Health Services floor
Services include: primary care for uninsured adults, primary dental care for adults and children, mental health services, innoculations, breast and cervical cancer screenings, flu shots, ophthalmological screenings, diabetic retinopathy screenings and ob/gyn - Learn to appreciate the gifts, talents, and contributions of clients from over 23 Spanish-speaking countries as well as clients from various European, African, and Asiatic countries who enrich our culture.
Time commitments are flexible. - Monday-Friday: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
- Tuesday or Thursday: 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.
- Saturday: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Walking distance from JHSPH is just under one mile. Take Broadway toward Fells Point. We guide and educate our clients on accessing services in the school system, medical system and their day-to-day needs. We provide assistance with school forms. Additionally, we assist clients by referring them to appropriate services such as housing, legal aid, and healthcare.
We can help and refer our clients dealing with issues involving the MVA, non-immigration legal situations, and utility and other billiings. Our staff can also offer translation services for written documents such as birth certificates and school records, for phone conversations, and for personal situations. Brochure Services Volunteers are needed at the Esperanza Center to teach English as a second language and basic computer skills, monitor the language lag, assist at the referral desk. Volunteers are needed mostly on Tuesday and Thursday nights and Saurday mornings.
