Function of Organization/Site:

Health Leads (formerly Project HEALTH) came to Baltimore in 2006 through the leadership of former Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Joshua Sharfstein and Baltimore HealthCare Access.  In less than four years, Health Leads in Baltimore has become the organization’s largest site, partnering with Johns Hopkins University, Loyola University of Maryland, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Volunteer Opportunities:

The Health Leads Bayview Emergency Department program is one of five programs in Baltimore City and is staffed by an interdisciplinary team of student volunteers from the Johns Hopkins Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health.  Volunteers at this site help patients with a range of services, from filling out health insurance applications to referring them to primary care appointments, with a special emphasis on helping patients without health insurance secure access to community-based primary care.  Volunteers will have the opportunity to work with patients in a hospital setting, gain knowledge of the health care landscape and work with an interdisciplinary team of students.
