Medical Students and the Baltimore Community

Medical students at Hopkins have a long tradition of involvement in the Baltimore community, and a number of opportunities exist for getting involved.  For students interested in pursuing independent projects with community organizations, or joining Hopkins-wide efforts in the community, click here to see what opportunities are currently available through SOURCE.  Medical students have also organized over 20 student-run groups that are actively involved in the community, which are coordinated by a body of students known as InterAction (IA).

Health Care Disparities and Service Experience
This special Intersession is offered to the incoming medical student class just before Orientation. The 3 day course will be offered from Mon, Aug 18 through Wed, Aug 20th. For details about the course, click here.

Mission
InterAction Council

InterAction Meetings
Service-Based Student Groups in the SOM

InterAction at the School of Medicine aims to provide Johns Hopkins medical students with the opportunities and organization needed to develop a unique and long-lasting niche in the Baltimore community. By linking already existing resources, we aim to help students become more effectively involved in community service and social justice activities. InterAction works closely with SOURCE to accomplish our similar missions.

Through collaboration with faculty, staff and students from other Johns Hopkins graduate schools (particularly public health and nursing), we seek to increase medical school student interaction with the rest of the University and foster inter-disciplinary approaches to urban health. In the long run, we aim to develop community service projects that match medical school students' unique skills and interests with the needs of the community. With institutional support in the forms of funding and faculty mentorship, we hope to ensure the longevity of our projects.

For more information on service-based medical student organizations, click here.

We strive to:

  • integrate community outreach activities more fully into the academic programs of the school;
  • help organizations inform others about their mission, meeting times, and special events;
  • help students connect to organizations that best suit their interests;
  • help organizations collaborate with one another on projects.

By educating medical students about Baltimore, we hope to increase student awareness and sensitivity to issues facing this community.  We feel this will positively contribute to their development as effective physicians.
