FAQsHow do I apply for the Hopkins Sommer Scholars program? There is no separate application process for the Hopkins Sommer Scholarship. If you are interested in a Hopkins Sommer Scholarship, you must apply to and be accepted by a doctoral program or the Master of Public Health (MPH) program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Doctoral students are nominated for the scholarship after completing one full academic year at the Bloomberg School. Those interested in the Hopkins Sommer Scholars program are invited to address one of the following questions in the personal statement on the application for admission: How have you taken advantage of the leadership development opportunities you have had, and how have they shaped you? What is the most significant achievement so far in your life?
I want to earn a Master of Health Science (MHS) or a Master of Science (MSc) degree. Can I become a Hopkins Sommer Scholar? No. To be considered for a Hopkins Sommer Scholarship, you must be a full-time student in a doctoral program or admitted into the Master of Public Health (MPH) program as a full-time student at the Bloomberg School. What's the application deadline? The MPH Program and individual doctoral programs have slightly different application deadlines. We recommend strongly that you make every effort to submit your completed application along with all the required supporting documents well before the deadline of the program to which you are applying. Only completed applications can be reviewed, and only then can accepted students be nominated for a Hopkins Sommer Scholarship. What happens after I have submitted my application? The department or program to which you have applied will review your application. If you are accepted for admission to the School, the program or department will consider nominating you for a Hopkins Sommer Scholarship. Each department or program will nominate a few select individuals from among their accepted applicants to be considered for a Hopkins Sommer Scholarship. A faculty committee will then meet and select the Hopkins Sommer Scholars. What criteria are used to evaluate Hopkins Sommer Scholar nominees? There are no set criteria such as minimum GRE scores, grade point averages or letters of recommendation. Successful candidates have excellent academic backgrounds and have demonstrated their ability to make an impact in the field of public health. When will I know if I’ve been accepted as a Hopkins Sommer Scholar? We recommend that applicants send in all applications and related materials well before the application deadline so that they can be notified in a timely manner of their acceptance to the department or program to which they have applied. Those MPH students who then go on to be accepted as Hopkins Sommer Scholars will be notified in mid-March. Doctoral students will be notified in January. How much are the living stipends? In 2011-12, stipends for MPH students are $21,600 per year. The stipend amount for doctoral students varies by department and will be at least $21,600 per year. Stipend support will be one year for MPH students and up to five for doctoral students from the start of their doctoral programs. What kinds of people become Hopkins Sommer Scholars? Hopkins Sommer Scholars have innate leadership skills in diverse areas including, but not necessarily limited to, public health. The program welcomes applicants from all backgrounds who want to make a difference by leveraging their previous professional experience to shape the public health policy of the future. Applicants may include writers, doctors, lawyers, scientists, politicians, business executives, journalists, engineers, financial analysts, economists and others who want to make a difference in the world and are seeking the tools to do so effectively. What will be expected of me as a Hopkins Sommer Scholar? Hopkins Sommer Scholars must remain full-time students in good standing, participate in Sommer Scholars Enrichment Program and conduct themselves in a way that brings credit to the School, the University and the Hopkins Sommer Scholars program.
