Karin Tobin, PhD
Assistant Scientist/Project Director
ktobin@jhsph.edu

Dr. Tobin is an assistant scientist with the Department of Health, Behavior and Society. Her research interests include examination of the social and contextual factors associated with substance abuse and HIV risk, particularly with marginalized populations. She is currently involved with several NIDA and NIMH funded social-network oriented behavioral interventions with high-risk adults (domestically and internationally), investigation of risk factors associated with drug overdose and witness responses and translation of the SHIELD intervention for national dissemination.

What I enjoy most about my job is the diversity of my responsibilities. I enjoy interacting with participants and learning about ways to help communities that are affected by HIV.

Assistant Scientist

PhD, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
MPH, Emory University/Rollins School of Public Health

I am the Project Coordinator of the CHAT Project at the Lighthouse. Also, I am the evaluator and technical assistance coordinator for the SHIELD replication project. I have over eight years of experience working with at-risk populations in urban communities. My background is behavioral science, health education and program evaluation. My own research focuses on the role of perceived norms and communication in HIV risk behaviors.

Tami K. Ito, MHS
Research Project Coordinator
tito@jhsph.edu

My role at the Lighthouse includes the coordination of the BEACON medical adherence study, and involvement in the emergency services initiative. These projects seek to develop health interventions through clinic, agency, and community collaboration.  My experience includes more than 20 years of public health, participatory training, organizational development, and research in government and non-governmental health programs in Africa, SE Asia and the U.S.  I am most interested in programs involving the development of collaborative community-based interventions, and active skill transfer and capacity building with team counterparts.
