Background The U.S. Congress created the Fulbright Program in 1946 to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchanges. Senator J. William Fulbright sponsored the legislation. Today the Fulbright Program is the U.S. Government's premier scholarship program and enables U.S. students to benefit from unique resources in every corner of the world while promoting cross-cultural interaction. Each year the Fulbright Program allows Americans to study of conduct research in over 100 nations. The program is administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) which coordinates the annual competition for scholarships, most of which are for one academic year of study or research.
The Annual Cycle May 1st launches the beginning of the annual cycle. Completed applications are due to JHSPH on September 21, 2011 and at IIE offices October 17, 2011. Applicants are notified of their status in the preliminary stage of the competition by the end of January. Recommended candidates can expect a final notification before the end of June. Campus Committee: a committee of faculty is formed in early October for the purpose of evaluating and strengthening the candidate's proposal. Applications and supporting documentation are then sent to IIE to complete the selection process.
National Screening Committee: all documents and supporting materials are reviwed by screening committee members. The "Statement of Proposed Study" is very carefully reviewed. Taken into consideration is the nature of the project, its originality, the academic preparation for completing the project described, including language proficiency, and the interest of the student as evidenced by any advance research done to determine that the resources needed to accomplish the proposed project are in fact available in the host country. Past Success In past years, Hopkins students have been awarded grants for study in nations around the globe, including - Thailand, Mexico, Vietnam and the Dominican Republic, Brazil, the Netherlands, Ethiopia, Canada, Jamaica, and Uganda. 2004 - 2005 Recipients 2005 - 2006 Recipients 2006 - 2007 Recipients 2007 - 2008 Recipients 2008 - 2009 Recipients 2009 - 2010 Recipients 2011 - 2012 Recipients The grant provides funds for round-trip transportation, language courses, books and living expenses in the host country.
