SUBJECT: The Pursuit of Degrees by Faculty

POLICY

A few faculty, from time to time, have expressed the wish to enroll as advanced degree students while continuing as members of the faculty. Although faculty are encouraged to continue their growth and development through formal courses and other mechanisms, conflicts of commitment may arise when a faculty member of the School wishes to enroll in a degree program on either a full- or part-time basis. Under such circumstances, participation in such a program must neither detract from nor interfere with performance as an employee of the University.

PROCEDURE

A department chair, and ultimately the Dean's Office, is responsible for reviewing and, as appropriate, approving, in writing, a faculty's member's request to enroll on either a full- or part-time basis as a degree student at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. Such requests should be submitted in writing to the Dean by the faculty member's department chair in advance of the expected time of admission and registration.
